M25-A2 Custer II
History
The MT 25A2 Custer II entered service in 1947 as an interim upgrade to the earlier Custer I, using the same reliable chassis but introducing a significantly redesigned turret. This new, boxier turret featured improved armour protection and a lower-pressure variant of the 92mm M40 cannon — the same gun family later standardised on the M147 Crossroad. The intention was simple: increase battlefield firepower across U.S. tank units without waiting for an entirely new generation of tanks to be produced.
While its firepower marked a clear improvement over the original Custer, the Custer II came with drawbacks. The heavier turret placed greater stress on the hull and drivetrain, shortening the tank’s service life. Its turret traverse was also noticeably slower due to the enlarged gun and reinforced armour, which limited its responsiveness in close-quarter engagements. Still, crews appreciated the increased punch of the M40 cannon, which gave them far more confidence when engaging the heavier Japanese armour that had begun appearing late in the war.
Operational impact was limited — production numbers were modest, and by the time it entered combat, the Custer II was overshadowed by more modern vehicles already on the horizon. It fought from 1947 to 1951 on the frontlines, but it was never a posterchild of the war.
After withdrawal from combat service, most Custer II tanks found new lives as training vehicles or technical testbeds, while others were sold to allied militaries or used as gunnery targets.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
