MX-104
History
Introduced in 1962, the Australian MX 104 Battle Tank was a strange but highly effective hybrid of light-tank mobility and medium-tank firepower. Its armour was little more than heavy-machine-gun proof, a deliberate design choice that kept weight down so engineers could exploit a then-advanced electric transmission system. This granted the MX 104 an exceptional top speed of ~60 kph in both forward and reverse, that made the tank ideal for fast flanking manoeuvres and rapid disengagement. Armed with a powerful 105mm L15 cannon, early APFSDS ammunition, and a coaxial 20mm autocannon, the MX 104 comfortably outgunned nearly every vehicle in its weight class. The commander also enjoyed a fully traversable cupola equipped with a .50-cal machine gun, giving the tank unusually strong all-round anti-infantry coverage.
Despite its impressive firepower, it was clear from the earliest pre-production models that the MX 104 lacked the protection needed for frontline breakthrough work. As a result, the tank was assigned the doctrinal niche of a high-mobility long-range tank destroyer, using speed and stand-off distance rather than armour to survive. Australia repeatedly revised the tank’s systems, electronics, ammunition stowage, and transmission cooling, resulting in a vehicle that, ironically, entered service after the heavier tank whose development began later. While never intended to fight alone, the MX 104 excelled when used alongside its heavier companion — the A51 Centaur — acting as the fast spearpoint or disengagement asset in combined armoured groups.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
