Completed in December 1907 as Norwegian Clothilde Cuneo for J. Bull, Tønsberg. 1920 renamed Kong Inge for Det Søndenfjelds Norske D/S, Oslo. 1932 sold to Iceland and renamed Hekla for H/f Eimskipafjelag Reykjavikur (Faaberg & Jakobsson), Reykjavik.
Notes on event
At 19.58 hours on 29 Jun 1941 the unescorted Hekla was torpedoed by U-564 and sank within two minutes. Seven men survived the sinking and spent 10 days on a life raft before they were picked up by HMS Candytuft (K 09) (LtCdr F.B. Collinson, RD, RNR) escorting convoy OB-341, but one man died the next night onboard the corvette. The surviving 6 men were taken to St. Johns, Newfoundland. One of the men spent over 6 months in a hospital before going back to Iceland. She was third largest icelandic ship lost in the second world war. 14 crew members lost their lives in the sinking.
