This is a prototype / low usage gun ship in world war 2. It is a modified B17-F that turned it into a gunship, made for escorting B-17s. At the time there were not a lot of capable long range escort fighters to do this job, so this was the best they had got.
Modifications include:
[i]-Removed bombing equipment and replaced the bomb bay with extra ammo and repairing equipment.
-Bombardier replaced by a gunner manning a Bendix chin turret with 2x 50.cals. (single 50.cal in the nose removed)
-Radio operator single 50.cal roof gun replaced by dorsal turret from the engineers post. (2x 50.cals)
-Single 50.cal waist guns replaced by twin 50.cal mounts. (+1 50.cal to each waist) [/i]
[b] There were other modifications that crews added like different gun amounts and calibers,
but these where standard modifications to make a YB-40 Gunship.
