BACKGROUND
The GTC A-12 Class “Arctic Express” is a powerful 2-8-4 steam locomotive manufactured by GTC, a leading American locomotive maker from 1944-1952. Built as flagship passenger engines for northern service, the A-12 Class was engineered to master long distances, heavy snow, and sustained high-speed running in extreme climates. Its robust design and reliable performance made it the primary power for the Arctic Express, operating on Line No. 1454 through the rugged Sawyer Islands archipelago, where endurance, traction, and speed were essential for year-round passenger service.
